Interlibrary Loans (ILL) and Document Deliveries
Interlibrary lending, led by Barb Neyman, helps the library provide specialized information to employees in ways that are more effective than if we attempted to acquire, catalog, and store all needed publications. Demand for ILL and document delivery remains strong and this quarter the library was well above its 5-year average for ILL fulfillment to VDOT customers. With the addition of Amy Skretta to the library's staff, we began to transition responsibilities for Interlibrary Loans and Document Deliveries. Due to our extensive use of OCLC Worldshare ILL software and the complexities of interlibrary loans, we expect the training and the transition process to take multiple quaraters.
This quarter the library requested and received 32 total items from other libraries. 22 separate libraries loaned items to us, of which 24 were supplied by academic libraries and 3 by federal libraries, 3 by special libraries and 2 by state libraries. Items requested were from libraries in 11 U.S. states and Spain. 14 of the requests arrived as hard copy (books/reports) and 18 as photocopy/digital/ fax (articles, chapters, excerpts).
This quarter we received 50 requests from 42 libraries in 22 U.S. states and one foreign country (Canada). We were able to supply 2 items total: 1 as hard copy and 1 as a scan. Neither of the items was loaned to a transportation library, with 1 going to a federal library and 1 to an academic library.
