This new guide on National Work Zone Awareness Week 2019 connects you to internal and external training resources. 


Today the nation kicks off the annual public awareness campaign for
National Work Zone Awareness Week 2019 and to help compile information and training materials in one place the library has compiled this handy guide.

 

The guide links you to resources related to work zone awareness including: History, Education, Training, Research, the VDOT Memorial and much more. Plus, it's got handy links back to the library's collections and services if you need access to books, research materials, or anything else related to work zone safety.

 

The goal of this nationwide campaign is to urge motorists to use caution while driving through work zones, with this year's slogan: Drive Like you Work Here... in order to help reduce accidents by reducing things key drivers of distracted driving, such as talking or texting while driving.

 

Believe it or not, in 2018 Virginia experienced 2,523 work zone crashes, resulting in 1,256 injuries and nine deaths. Distracted driving was reported to be a factor in 482 of those crashes. Here's a breakdown of work zone crashes by district:

KEY DATES:

Memorial Vigil: Monday, April 8th

VDOT employees are invited to attend VDOT's Annual Work Zone Awareness Week Vigil at the VDOT Worker's Memorial. NOTE: This event is typically held at the Memorial on Afton Mountain but due to inclement weather, has been relocated to the Virginia Transportation Research Council  (VTRC)

 

"Go Orange" Day: Wednesday, April 10th

Show your support of work zone workers and increase awareness of work zone safety by wearing something orange on April 10th. Check out photos of VDOT employees from previous Go Orange Day events.  While you're at it, take a selfie or group photo and post to social media using the hashtags: #Orange4Safety or #OrangeForSafety.
