Ever wish you could wave a magic wand and get full text access to classic publications from the Transportation Research Board?

Wish no more, as the TRB Library is in the process of digitizing all pre-1996 issues of Transportation Research Record and Highway Research Record, as well as all pre-2000 TRB reports and other series that have never been available online before.

An up-to-date list of volumes that have been digitized is shown below (click on the title to see issue availability) and will be updated periodically in the coming months.

One thing to know is that TRB is digitizing serial publications (like Transportation Research Record and Highway Research Record) by "issue" not by "article."  So of if you see a TRID record with a URL like the one above, when you click on the link you'll get one big pdf of the entire issue, so you'll need to browse through it to find your specific article.

The good news is the scans are pretty darn clean, have Optical Character Recognition (which means you can search the text of the document), and best of all these publications all are publicly accessible so you can get to the full text from your VDOT computer or any connected device.

Of course, your library still has boatloads of hard copy publications (TRB and many other publishers) should you ever need them!

We're always just a click, a call or a chat away...

data sources guide

Check out this new guide to Transportation Planning Data Sources!

The VDOT library recently collaborated with Lance Dougald of the VTRC Environmental, Planning and Economics team to create a guide to transportation planning data sources. The project was initiated as a part of an implementation effort for the Transportation Planning Research Advisory Committee (TPRAC) originally outlined in the July 2015 Virginia Transportation Research Council report VCTIR 15-R23 Data Needs Assessment for Making Transportation Decisions in Virginia  (Khattak et. al).

Here members and friends of the Transportation Planning Research Advisory Committee (TPRAC) can find loads of information on and easy access to a range of data sources loosely grouped into nine major categories:

Traffic, Multi-modal, Geospatial, Inventory and Land Use, Economic and Demographic, Environment, Laws and Research, Projects, and Data Clearinghouse,

with a number of helpful of subcategories as well. Special instructions and other descriptive information about the various resources are included as well to help folks navigate.

Since the collection of data sources is continuously expanding, the guide also includes a form to suggest additional data sources of interest for inclusion on the guide

As with many of the library’s other research guides, we’ve also included lots of handy features like our Library Chat widget and a Help tab to readily find further assistance if and when you need it. (We’re just a click away!)

For questions, comments or concerns about the guide contact Lance Dougald at VTRC or contact the library directly.

As always, we're here to help!

In case you missed it, AASHTO has recently released the first of three 2018 updates to the Web-based edition of the Materials Standards, formally titled Standard Specifications for Transportation Materials and Methods of Sampling and Testing, and the AASHTO Provisional Standards, 2018 Edition. (Two additional 2018 updates are set to be released in June and August.)

The latest update includes 7 new and 29 revised standards and revises the following sections:

Hydraulic Cement and Lime
Fresh Concrete
Hardened Concrete
Pavement Measurement
Bridge and Pavement Preservation
Quality Assurance and Environmental

Image of the ASTM Compass database.

Did you know that the VDOT Library provides VDOT employees with access to these and other AASHTO standards along with plenty of other great AASHTO content through the ASTM Compass subscription database?  This is by far the quickest and easiest way to get instant access to the AASHTO standards you need- plus plenty of other helpful features and content as well.

Check out this Connections post to learn more about ASTM Compass.

Again, the second and third installments are expected this June and August so stay tuned to Connections for more updates!

We created this Quick Start Guide to ASCE Library to help you find ASCE articles, conference papers and E-Books.

Did you know as a VDOT employee you now have access to the ASCE Library database of publications?

ASCE Library contains more than 120,000 full text articles, papers, conference proceedings and eBooks...including all the most recent articles from all 38 ASCE technical journals

Because VDOT has an agency-wide subscription, articles from those journals (which cost $30 each if bought separately) are folded into the agency's annual subscription.  Translation: Zero cost to you!
