This new Web page shows the library's journal holdings information and links you to full-text articles from most frequently used journals in VDOT-land. Sort By Title, By Subject, or check out the Top 100 list based on downloads.
When VDOT Research Library was founded in 1953 we began amassing an impressive collection of print journals, with deep back runs of core journals held by only a handful of libraries nationwide. Owning complete runs of those journals is great because it means we've got the high-quality articles employees need. Back in the day those journals were located "on our shelves" for you to find, and borrow or photocopy.
As VDOT evolved, we heard your requests for increased "self service" access to electronic journals loud and clear!
In some cases, core publishers have been slow to respond with full-text online subscriptions. But gradually they came around. In recent years we have inked licensing deals for unlimited VDOT access to technical journals through databases like ASCE Library (all 38 ASCE journals), the ICE Virtual Library (40 journals from the Institution of Civil Engineers), the amazing ScienceDirect collection (more than 2,500 titles) and our largest but least well known collection of journals Business Source Corporate Plus (thousands of research, trade, business and popular journal titles).
In addition to these "big sets" of journals, we kept adding high-demand titles "a la carte" from publishers like Sage (Transportation Research Record) and Taylor & Francis Online (Road Materials and Pavement Design).
Finally, let's not forget that you can get to "open access" online journals like Public Roads, which is available online thanks to FHWA from 1993-present (and on the library's shelves in print going back to 1918!).
Problem solved, right? Well, sort of...
We're still convinced a lot of high-quality journals are being overlooked because they're in separate databases amidst all kinds of other resources (eBooks, standards, etc.).
So we decided to put the best of the best all in one place in this new new A-Z Core Journals List.
While the list represents just a handful of core titles, we hope it will help you find more of the resources you need, whether you have a citation in hand and need the full text, or you are starting with a general topic and need to find more authoritative articles to resolve a technical or business challenge.
Look for your favorite journal and bookmark titles that seem promising. Sort by subject and you may be surprised to discover you have access to some really high-quality scholarship and "best practices" research that can help you help keep VDOT moving!
