Interlibrary Loans (ILL) and Document Deliveries
No library can acquire, catalog and store ALL publications that might be needed, and it's never a good idea to try to do so. That's where Interlibrary Loans, managed by Barb Neyman, comes in. The ILL and Document Delivery service helps quickly locate, borrow and deliver rare and hard-to-find publications. The library continues to be a net borrower and uses OCLC software to efficiently place and receive loan requests from thousands of libraries worldwide. The library is able to offer this service to all VDOT employees.
This quarter the library requested and received 34 total items from other libraries. 20 libraries worldwide lent items to our library, 31 of our requests were supplied by academic libraries, 2 from public libraries, and 1 from a "state" library. Items requested were from libraries in 9 states and 1 foreign country (Australia). 12 of the requests were filled as hard copy (books/reports) and 22 as photocopy/digital/fax (articles, chapters, excerpts).
This quarter we received 23 requests from 22 libraries in 14 states. We supplied 4 items total. 2 items were loaned to Academic libraries, 1 to a Federal library, and 1 to a Private library. One hard copy was lent and three photocopies were delivered.
