ASTM Compass now offers access to the 2017 LRFD Bridge Design Specifications (8th Ed.)

AASHTO's 1,781 page "bible" of bridge design, evaluation and rehabilitation is now available as a pdf in ASTM Compass. The html version should be added in 2-4 weeks.

The 8th edition (2017) of AASHTO's LRFD Bridge Design Specifications is here, and the VDOT Research Library is proud to announce its availability "free" as an online resource to VDOT employees through the amazing ASTM Compass database. Currently it is only available as a large pdf file, but in the coming weeks the "browseable" html version will become available.

The AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, 8th Edition is intended for use in the design, evaluation, and rehabilitation of bridges, and are mandated by the Federal Highway Administration for use on all bridges using federal funding.  The design provisions of these specifications employ the Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) methodology. The factors have been developed from the theory of reliability based on current statistical knowledge of loads and structural performance. Methods of analysis other than those included in previous specifications and the modeling techniques inherent in them are included, and their use is encouraged.

The new edition includes a reorganization of Chapter 5: Concrete Structures and starting with this edition Interim Specifications will no longer be issued. Instead, changes balloted and approved by at least two-thirds of the members of the Subcommittee will be published in the next full edition of the Specifications, to be published on a three-year cycle by AASHTO members.

The new ROSA P public repository replaces the NTL's legacy "Integrated Search Tool," which was nearly 10 years old.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Transportation Library has announced it is replacing its online Integrated Search tool with a new resource called the Repository and Open Science Access Portal (ROSA P)

This new version of this repository is freely accessible and designed to enhance access to the NTL’s collection of over 30,000 items. The Integrated Search tool will be phased out at the end of the calendar year.

Members of the transportation community and the general public can use ROSA P for all the open data and publications NTL acquires, manages and preserves.  According to a press release issued by US DOT, "ROSA P offers NTL users a better, more useful and more reliable experience.

Watch this detailed Webinar for more information about ROSA P or check out these PowerPoint slides from the presentation. For more information contact about ROSA P contact: Dave Smallen, (202) 366-5568, david.smallen@dot.gov

Virginia Roads is a one-stop portal for mapping applications and geospatial datasets related to Virginia Roads and infrastructure.

The Virginia Roads Open Data Portal — developed in 2014 to provide user-friendly access to all of the Virginia Department of Transportation's map products and ensure public transparency — has been enhanced!

The Portal was created using ESRI's ArcGIS Online, which helps leverage existing VDOT geographic and cartographic data and make it accessible to the public. ArcGIS Online is a collaborative, cloud-based platform for using, creating, and sharing maps, applications, and data. For more information go to: https://www.esri.com/

The improved Virginia Roads pulls together all kinds of VDOT project information in one place for a general public audience, to assist citizens, elected officials, local government partners and others in getting current information quickly and in an easy-to-understand format.

The Portal and all its contents are freely accessible to anyone with an Internet-connected device. There is no need to register in order to take advantage of the data, links and "applications" on the Portal. That includes 22 Spatial Datasets covering everything from projects in the Six Year Improvement Plan, to Virginia Crashes, to Snow Plow Maps.

Advanced users, developers and researchers may want to take advantage of datasets (free for download) or APIs (Application Programming Interfaces), which make it easier for developers to leverage data VDOT makes available through the Portal.
