Virtual Library Card

The library’s “Virtual Library Card” helps VDOT employees access library collections and services remotely, which is critical now. We created the VLC by connecting the library’s EOS automation system (which has patron user names and passwords) to a hosted authentication service called EZProxy. The bar graph below (left) shows cardholder growth during the past five quarters. This quarter we onboarded 47 patrons and offboarded 41, which is not unusual. The pie chart (right) shows VLC growth of 10 accounts this quarter, with a breakout showing the ways new patron accounts are created:
Self-Registration (4): Some employees register themselves online. We activate those accounts, and send a welcome message.
Onboarding (47): Though Virginia Governor Northam instituted a hiring freeze for all state agencies, the library still onboarded 47 VDOT employees (who were probably critical hires or whose hiring was underway when the pandemic hit).
Removed (41): This number of accounts were removed this quarter due to employee separations.

In the "onboarding" process new employee e-mail addresses are collected from the Human Resources Org Chart. We create a VLC account and send an e-mail “welcome package” with links to: an instructional video, tips for accessing subscriptions from off the VDOT network, and how to get in reach us for questions.
