Interlibrary Loans (ILL) and Document Deliveries
Interlibrary lending, led by Barb Neyman, helps us locate, acquire, and deliver specialized information to VDOT employees in a way that is more effective than if we were to attempt to acquire, catalog, and store all publications that might be requested. Once again this quarter we find ourselves to be a net borrower. Because we use special OCLC WorldShare ILL software, we can place and receive requests from thousands of libraries worldwide. This quarter's statistics illustrate the power of this approach, with 24 items borrowed from 24 libraries in 11 states and 2 foreign countries (Canada and England.) Of the materials we borrowed this quarter, 70% (17 items) were filled as "hard copy," while 30% (7 items) were scanned.
This quarter the library requested and received 24 total items from other libraries. We received items from 24 different libraries, from 11 different states and 2 foreign countries (Canada and England), only 2 of which were "transportation" libraries. In all, 19 of the items were from academic libraries, 2 from state libraries, and one each from federal, public and private libraries. Of all requests, 17 were filled as hard copy (books/reports) and 7 as digital (articles/chapters/excerpts).
This quarter we received 21 requests from 17 libraries in 12 states and Canada. We supplied 12 items total, and those loans were delivered as 5 hard copies and 7 scanned items. Of the twelve items, 1 was sent to a federal library, and 8 items were sent to academic libraries, 1 to a local government library and 2 to a private library.
