Virtual Library Card

The library’s Virtual Library Card helps employees access library collections and services. We created the VLC in FY2015 by connecting the library’s EOS Library automation system (which has patron user names and passwords) to a hosted authentication service from OCLC called EZProxy. The bar graph below (left) shows cardholder growth over the past five quarters. The pie chart (right) shows cardholder growth this quarter, with a breakout showing the three ways new accounts can be created:

Onboarding (25): The library gets new employee data from Human Resources and staffers create new accounts and send a “welcome” e-mail to these new VDOT employees. 
Self-Registration (0): Some VDOT employees register themselves online. Library staff verify and activate accounts.
Other Requests (0): These cards are created for walk-in patrons or patrons who submitted an e-mail or online request.
Removed (10): This number of accounts were removed this quarter due to employee separations.

The library conducts "onboarding" a process where new VDOT employee e-mail addresses are collected from the VDOT Human Resources Org Chart on InsideVDOT. We create a Virtual Library Card account and send an e-mail “welcome package” with links to: an instructional video, access subscriptions from off the VDOT network, login instructions, and how to get in reach us for questions. New library staffer Rebecca Ernest took over onboarding this quarter. While accounts can be created other ways, this quarter we saw an unusual detail: all new accounts were created through onboarding.
