Virtual Library Card

We created the VLC by connecting the library’s EOS Library automation system (which has patron user names and passwords) to an OCLC-hosted authentication service called EZProxy. The bar graph below (left) shows cardholder growth during the past five quarters. The pie chart (right) shows VLC growth this quarter, with a breakout showing the types of new accounts are created. Note: This quarter the library was challenged to with with VDOT HR on a new method for identifying departed patrons, who must be removed from our systems so that VDOT stays in compliance with licensing agreements. We will be monitoring this new method in coming quarters to be sure it is precise and can be applied in a timely manner.

Onboarding (60): Data from Human Resources is used to create accounts for new VDOT employees. 
Self-Registration (1): Some VDOT employees register themselves. Library staff verify identities and welcome them.
Other Requests (6): These cards are created for walk-in patrons or patrons who submitted an e-mail or online request.

This quarter Rebecca Ernest did onboarding, which includes creating accounts for new VDOT personnel and sending an e-mail “welcome package” with links to: an instructional video, access subscriptions from off the VDOT network, login instructions, and how to reach us for questions. Onboarding activity was healthy (with 67 accounts created) but there was an unusually high quantity of "offboarding" (we removed 193 accounts of departed patrons) done by Barb Neyman, resulting in a net loss of accounts.
