Virtual Library Card
 

The “Virtual Library Card” helps VDOT employees access collections and services remotely by connecting the library’s automation system to an OCLC-hosted authentication service called EZProxy. The bar graph (below) shows VLC growth over the past five quarters. This quarter 50 library patrons separated from VDOT and 17 new cardholders were added, for a net loss of 33 accounts. The pie chart (right) shows the all new self-service accounts:

New Cards from Self-Registration (16): Some VDOT employees self-register online. Library staff verify identities, activate accounts, and send a welcome message and support materials.
New Cards from Onboarding (1): We suspended most onboarding activity in 2022 due to lack of HR data.
New Cards from "Other" Requests (0): Cards created for walk-in patrons or patrons who called on the phone.

Since 2014 we have "onboarded" new employees based on HR data. The library creates accounts for new personnel and reaches out online. Onboarding/offboarding efforts have been negatively impacted by the implementation of a new Oracle-based Human Capital Management System and we suspended it completely for three quarters. We are now getting accurate data directly from HR, but it is not clear onboarding the way we've been doing it results in more library use so we are considering a new methodology that will yield not only more library "cards" but more actual library "users."
