Interlibrary Loans (ILL) and Document Deliveries
The Interlibrary lending service, led by Barb Neyman, allows the library to rapidly locate, acquire, and deliver resources to VDOT employees in ways that are far more effective than if we were to attempt to acquire, catalog, and store every resource that might be requested. The library continues to be a net borrower by a large margin. We use OCLC's WorldShare ILL software to place and receive loan requests from a pool of thousands of libraries worldwide to the benefit of VDOT employees in all districts and divisions who need expensive or hard-to-find research materials. While we consider ourselves "specialized transportation" library, we find we have more ILL interactions (both lending and borrowing) with academic libraries.
This quarter we received 42 requests from 28 libraries worldwide, of which 8 were transportation libraries. We borrowed 26 items from academic libraries, 8 from state libraries, 4 from public libraries, 3 from federal libraries and 1 item from a national library. Items were requested from libraries in 6 U.S. States and from one foreign country (China).
This quarter we received 25 requests from 24 libraries in 15 states. We supplied 5 items total, 4 scanned item and 1 hard copy item. Of items loaned, 2 went to "transportation libraries" 1 to a federal library, and 3 to academic libraries.
