Interlibrary Loans (ILL) and Document Deliveries
Interlibrary loans, led by Barb Neyman, helps the library locate, acquire, and deliver specialized information to VDOT employees in a way that is more effective than if we attempted to acquire, catalog, and store all needed publications. The library continues to be a net borrower in general. But for the first time since 2010 this quarter the library supplied more items (18) than we borrowed from other libraries (17). We use OCLC's WorldShare ILL to place and receive loan requests from thousands of libraries worldwide. VDOT employees benefit from this service, particularly due to the fact that our borrowing and lending knows no geographic boundaries. This quarter, for example, we borrowed items from libraries in eight different states and one library in Canada, while lending items to libraries in Denmark, Australia and Italy.
This quarter the library requested and received 17 items from other libraries. 15 libraries worldwide supplied items to our library, thought only 1 item came from a transportation library. 16 of our requests were supplied by academic libraries and 1 came from a federal library. Items requested were from libraries in 8 states and 1 foreign country (Canada). 13 of the requests were filled as hard copy (books/reports) and 4 as copies (articles, chapters, excerpts).
This quarter we received 68 requests from 49 libraries in 25 states in addition to Denmark, Australia and Italy. We supplied 18 items total, and those loans were delivered as 8 hard copies and 10 scanned items. Of the 18 items, 7 went to federal libraries, 10 were sent to academic libraries and 1 went to a state library.
