Interlibrary Loans (ILL) and Document Deliveries
Interlibrary lending, led by Barb Neyman, is critical for locating and delivering specialized resources to VDOT employees. We use OCLC's WorldShare ILL to process requests from libraries worldwide. However, our account was set to "deflect" requests in March 2020. On August 25th we changed that setting, but our lending profile indicates we may take up to 12 days to respond due to limited staffing. Since the pandemic started, we have borrowed 136 items from other libraries but only loaned 2 items. This quarter we borrowed 19 items via ILL and loaned zero items for the fourth quarter in a row.
This quarter we requested and received 19 items from 12 libraries worldwide. Of all requests, 14 were supplied by academic libraries, 3 came from federal libraries, 1 came from a state library and 1 came from a public library. No items supplied were from "transportation" libraries. Items requested were borrowed from libraries in 7 states and 1 foreign country (Canada). 6 of the requests were filled as hard copy (books/reports) and 13 as photocopy/digital/fax (articles/chapters).
This quarter we received 17 requests from 17 libraries in 13 U.S. states two foreign countries (France and Australia). All were automatically deflected (not filled) because they were for reference materials we don't lend outside of VDOT, or requests for e-Books, which we can't lend.
