Virtual Library Card

The “Virtual Library Card” helps VDOT employees access collections and services remotely. The bar graph (below) shows VLC growth over the past five quarters. This quarter 15 library patrons separated from VDOT and 48 new cardholders were added, for a net gain of 33 patron accounts and a total of 2,379 VDOT employees who have a card. Notably, this is the first net gain in library patron accounts in a year and is due in large part to the outreach and onboarding efforts of Amy Skretta. The pie chart (right, below) shows how accounts were created:
 

New Cards from Outreach Efforts (32): Some VDOT employees register themselves online. Library staff verify identities, activate those accounts, and send a welcome message and support materials.
New Cards from Other Requests (16): Cards created for walk-in patrons or patrons who submitted an online request.
New Cards from Self Registration (0): Employees can self-register online. Library staff verify identities, activate accounts, and send a welcome message and support materials.

Since 2014 we have "onboarded" new employees based on HR data, however, those efforts were impacted by the implementation of a new Oracle-based Human Capital Management System at VDOT, so we suspended onboarding based on HR data for several quarters. That process has resumed with more precise new employee data from HR and both the number of cardholders and the quantity of library use have increased.
