Using the SharePoint Mobile App: Getting Started

This guide walks VDOT employees through the process of downloading the SharePoint Mobile App and accessing VDOT's new SharePoint Online site from any connected device.

Getting Started With the SharePoint Mobile App

SharePoint infuses Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the mobile app experience to keep you focused and productive while on the go. That AI builds an understanding of what you are working on, how you work, and how your colleagues' work relates to you. Elements of the App will look and behave similarly regardless of device or operating system. More thorough support documentation is available from Microsoft.

NOTE: VDOT will be migrating pages from SharePoint 2010 to SharePoint Online between now and June 7, 2021. Users of the Mobile App will be able to access more content as it is migrated. The migration schedule and other FAQs are listed here.

Setting Notifications

When you first log in to the SharePoint Mobile App, you will be asked if you want to allow the app to send notifications to your device. Notifications could include alerts, sounds and icon badges.

You will need to select either "Don't Allow" or "Allow" in order to proceed, however, you can go into device settings at any time to reconfigure this option.

Basic Navigation

You will start from the "Find" tab, which helps you search for expertise and knowledge across VDOT.  You can return to the "Find" function at any time by tapping the  Screen capture of the find icon.  icon in the menu at the bottom of the screen.

From the SharePoint Mobile App Home screen, these are the key features you'll see:

1. Search: Enter search terms where it says "Search in Sharepoint" to locate people, files, news posts or sites. As you type in terms relevant results will dynamically populate existing screen space.

2. News: The News icon lets you browse previews of your team's latest news posts.

  • Tap a preview to read the full post, see likes and views, and add your own comments.
  • Tap the Bookmark icon at the top of a news post to "save" it.

3. Find: The Find icon is the same as "Search" and lets you search across all available SharePoint sites, including quick access to recent content and people you have interacted with, discover frequently visited sites, recent files and featured links installed by VDOT site administrators.

4. Me: The Me icon lets you find your saved content or see your profile.

  • Tap Recent to browse your recent items.

  • Tap Saved to see the news posts, pages, and files you've saved and set aside.
