Skillsoft Books: Quick Start Guide: Browsing

The purpose of this guide is to help VDOT employees find and use Skillsoft Books (formerly called Books24x7), a subscription database providing access to tens of thousands of eBooks, summaries, audio books and videos.

Overview

Browsing allows the user to select a general subject category. Content is grouped by type so that you can access books or videos, or you can drill down into specific sub-categories. In all cases, with browsing, you are selecting a pre-existing category (not typing in search terms), however, you are able to later "filter" by additional terms.

Two Ways to Browse

There are two ways to start browsing in Skillsoft Books:

First: Select a high-level category from the main menu, including: Business, Engineering, Finance, or Information Technology.

Selecting one of these subject options pulls up a screen that provides four separate ways to refine the browsing process. That screen looks like this:

Browsing high level categories shows these options.

Options include:

1. Categories (within the larger subject)

2. New Releases (within the larger subject)

3. Format switch between Books (the default) and Videos.

4. Items in the selected format that relate to the selected category (in this case, books on Business Skills)

Second: Select the "Browse Catalog" icon option at the top of the screen.

Selecting this option pulls up all the main categories and sub-categories, any of which can be selected:
