Interlibrary Loans (ILL) and Document Deliveries
Interlibrary lending, led by Barb Neyman, helps the library quickly locate, acquire, and deliver specialized information in a way that is more effective than if the library were to attempt to acquire, catalog, and store all of the same requested publications. Space restrictions in the library also prevent many new items from being added, so ILL is an important addition to library services. The library continues to be a net borrower and uses OCLC's WorldShare ILL software to efficiently place and receive loan requests from a pool of thousands of libraries worldwide to the benefit of VDOT employees in all districts and divisions who need esoteric research materials.
This quarter the library requested and received 59 total items from 34 libraries worldwide. 47 of the items we requested for VDOT employees were Academic libraries, 7 from Federal libraries, 4 from State libraries, and 1 item came from a Public library. Items requested were sent by libraries in 19 states and 2 foreign countries (Germany & Australia). Of all requests, 29 were filled as hard copy (books/reports) and 30 as photocopy/digital/ fax (articles, chapters, excerpts).
This quarter we received a total of 48 requests from 32 domestic libraries in 16 states and two libraries overseas. We supplied 8 items total. Of items we supplied, 4 were loaned to Academic libraries, 2 to a Federal library, 1 to a State library, and 1 to the Road and Transport Library in Australia. All 8 items requested were delivered as photocopies.
