Interlibrary Loans (ILL) and Document Deliveries
Interlibrary lending, led by Barb Neyman, helps the library quickly locate, acquire, and deliver specialized information to VDOT employees in a way that is more effective than if the library were to attempt to acquire, catalog, and store all of the requested publications. The library continues to be a net borrower. We use OCLC's WorldShare ILL software to efficiently place and receive loan requests from a pool of thousands of libraries worldwide to the benefit of VDOT employees in all districts and divisions who need rare or expensive research materials.
This quarter the library requested and received 35 total items from other libraries. 18 libraries worldwide lent items to our library, 27 of our requests were supplied by academic libraries, 3 from state libraries, 1 from a public library, and 4 from federal libraries. Items requested were from libraries in 6 states and 2 foreign countries (Germany & South Africa). 25 of the requests were filled as hard copy (books/reports) and 10 as photocopy/digital/ fax (articles, chapters, excerpts).
This quarter we received 36 requests from 29 libraries in 16 states and 1 foreign country (Norway). We supplied 4 items total: 1 scanned item to a Federal library, 1 scanned item to a State library, and the remaining two loans were both hard copies, 1 to a state library and 1 to an academic library.
