Interlibrary Loans (ILL) and Document Deliveries
Interlibrary lending, led by Barb Neyman, helps the library quickly locate, acquire, and deliver specialized information to VDOT employees in a way that is more effective than if the library were to attempt to acquire, catalog, and store all of the requested publications. The library continues to be a net borrower. We use OCLC's WorldShare ILL to efficiently place and receive loan requests from thousands of libraries worldwide. VDOT employees benefit tremendously from this service.
This quarter the library requested and received 30 items from other libraries. 27 libraries worldwide supplied items to our library, 2 of our requests were from transportation libraries. 23 of our requests were supplied by academic libraries, 2 by federal libraries, 2 by state libraries, 2 by public libraries, and 1 from a private library. Items requested were from libraries in 17 U.S. states. In all, 18 of the requests were filled as hard copy (books/reports) and 12 as photocopy/digital/ fax (articles, chapters, excerpts).
Since our ILL service began in 2006 we have always borrowed more than we are asked to loan — as many as 70 items in a quarter. But lending continues to decrease and we see that this quarter we only loaned one item. We can only loan if requests come to us, but we do routinely decline requests for loans of items we don't have or which are checked out.
