You don't have to visit the library in person to check out books and other print or "physical" materials from our shelves! With a Virtual Library Card you can log in to the Library Catalog from any Internet-connected device and you can: search all our print holdings, check out items, renew items you already have out, and put a "hold" on items others are presently using.
NOTE: Following instructions from VDOT Commissioner Steven C. Brich to help limit the spread of COVID-19, the library is temporarily closed to patron visitors. However, library staffers are on site weekly to check out and ship books and other items to requesting patrons.
Every week we ship items to VDOT personnel across the state, even during our reduced staffing due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We will ship hard-copy items you check out remotely with your Virtual Library Card and send them to VDOT employees across the state at any address you specify. We will even ship items to VDOT employees in other states!
Return Shipping
When items are due, it is the patron's responsibility to ship them back to us. You can use the U.S. Postal Service, a delivery service like FedX or UPS, or even VDOT Interoffice Mail. However, we do ask (if you return by a method other than Interoffice mail) that you insure the package for the amount noted on the slips in the books we shipped to you. When we ship items to you we should have included a return address sticker as well (we do not include pre-paid shipping costs) and we hope you'll use that label.
