Interlibrary Loans (ILL) and Document Deliveries
Interlibrary lending, led by Barb Neyman, is a service that allows us to quickly locate and deliver books and articles to VDOT employees by requesting loans (or reproductions) from other libraries. ILL is a "mediated service" whereby our library places borrowing requests on behalf of VDOT employees to other libraries using OCLC's WorldShare ILL software. In exchange we agree to make items in our collections visible to other libraries and to consider their borrowing requests. In the past 5 years we have averaged 7 loans per quarter to other libraries, while borrowing an average of 35 items. Last quarter we received an unusually high 73 requests, of which we filled only 5 (6.85%). This quarter that trend continued, with 86 requests, of which we filled only 8 (9.3%). Our historical average fill rate is 43% and our average fill rate for the past 5 years is 21%.
This quarter the library requested and received 29 total items from other libraries. 16 libraries worldwide loaned items to our library. In all, 23 of our requests were supplied by academic libraries, 3 by state libraries and 3 by federal libraries. Items requested were from libraries in 11 states. In all, 8 of the requests were filled as hard copy (books/reports) and 21 as photocopy/digital/ fax (articles, chapters, excerpts).
This quarter we received 86 requests from 65 libraries in 26 states and 2 foreign countries (Australia and Canada). We supplied 8 items total: 4 scanned and 4 hard copy. Of the items loaned, 5 were sent to Federal libraries and 3 to academic libraries.
