Interlibrary Loans (ILL) and Document Deliveries
Interlibrary lending, led by Barb Neyman, helps the library quickly locate, acquire, and deliver specialized information in a way that is more effective than if the library were to attempt to acquire, catalog, and store all of the same requested publications. Space restrictions in the library also prevent many new items from being added, so ILL is an important addition to library services. The library continues to be a net borrower and uses OCLC software to efficiently place and receive loan requests from a pool of thousands of libraries worldwide. The library is able to offer this service to all VDOT employees.
This quarter the library requested and received 23 total items from other libraries. 16 libraries worldwide lent items to our library, 17 of our requests were supplied by academic libraries, 2 from “other” libraries, 3 from public libraries, and 1 from a federal library. Items requested were from libraries in 7 states and 2 foreign countries (Germany & China). 11 of the requests were filled as hard copy (books/reports) and 12 as photocopy/digital/ fax (articles, chapters, excerpts).
We received 29 requests from 25 libraries in 15 states and Canada. We loaned 4 items total, which of all went to academic libraries. All items loaned were also in hard copy format.
